ECIS 2012 Doctoral Consortium

Nominations are being sought for the ECIS 2012 Doctoral Consortium which will take place in Barcelona on 8-10 June 2012 immediately prior to the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) Conference.

Eligibility

The objective of the ECIS Doctoral Consortium is to create a collegial and friendly atmosphere where PhD students currently working on Information Systems dissertations can share their work and receive valuable feedback. To get as much as possible out of the consortium, candidates should have successfully defended their thesis proposals before June 2012. Students who will have completed their dissertations by June 2012 or are close to completing will not be considered.

Eligible candidates should be currently enrolled in a University within AIS Area 2 (Europe, Africa and the Middle East). Each University can only nominate one candidate and must guarantee funding for the student to attend the Doctoral Consortium if selected. Room and board at the Doctoral Consortium are provided courtesy of ECIS and the conference sponsors.

Nomination Process

The nominating faculty must provided the information in the following nomination package in the form of three separate Word or PDF files: A Nomination Letter (link) A Nominee Information Sheet and dissertation abstract (link) A Dissertation Proposal Paper prepared by the doctoral student summarising the dissertation research (see details below) All three items must be sent no later than midnight Central European Time on January 31st 2012.

Incomplete nomination packages and nomination packages arriving after the deadline will not be considered.

Submission format and instructions

The paper outlining the candidate’s research must be in the form of an abbreviated dissertation proposal. Proposals must have a cover page with the following information.

Title of the proposal

Contact information for the candidate, including name, university, email address, mailing address, phone number, and fax number.

The proposal should provide the research question or topic, a justification for the importance of the research, a presentation of the theoretical basis or framework for the research, and a description of research approach and methodology. The proposal should also include a progress report as an appendix, indicating the estimated completion date and the work that remains to be done as of the date of submission of proposal. The proposal may not exceed 3,000 words (excluding references and the progress report appendix).

Selection process and related information

Selection to the ECIS Doctoral Consortium is competitive. Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the Consortium faculty. Participants will be selected based on the quality of the proposed research, its potential significance and contribution to the IS discipline, the potential contribution the student is likely to make to the Consortium, and the potential benefit of the Consortium to the student’s research.

Participation is limited to 20 students and the Doctoral Consortium committee will seek to include the best proposals as well as to balance the background and interests of the candidates.

The language for the Consortium is English, and all submitted material must be in English. Students must have sufficient proficiency in English to participate in the presentations, discussions, and other activities.

Nominating a student to the Doctoral Consortium is an implicit assurance that the student has the funding to travel to the Consortium location and that he or she will be able to stay for the duration of the event.

Notifications of the results of the selection process will be sent via e-mail to all applicants by March 31, 2012. Detailed instructions on activities prior to and during the consortium will be sent periodically after that date.
